VeriSign releases more traffic data about unregistered domains

Posted by – May 14, 2012

.com and .net registry provides added detail about NXD traffic.

VeriSign has enhanced its DomainScore tool to provide more insight into the traffic unregistered domains receive.

DomainScore provides a relative score for the amount of traffic an unregistered domain name receives. But this so-called “NXD” traffic doesn’t qualify the type of traffic very well. That’s part of the reason people complain that they register a domain with a high score based on VeriSign’s data and don’t get any traffic.

The latest update includes time-of-day and location information about unregistered domain traffic.

The column chart above is an example of the traffic insight you can get. Lots of requests but few unique requests? That should be a warning sign. When the traffic comes in may have to do with the type of site.

The geo location data is helpful for a number of reasons. One obvious one: if you’re going to park the domain, you probably want traffic from the U.S. rather than China because it monetizes better.

VeriSign has also enhanced the user interface and historic data for its DomainView tool.

Will Adding a Google +1 Button Increase Referring Site Traffic?

Will Adding a Google +1 Button Increase Referring Site Traffic?

Will Adding a Google +1 Button Increase Referring Site Traffic?

Will Adding a Google +1 Button Increase Referring Site Traffic?

With so many social networks and profiles that a company needs to stay on top of, I often get this question from clients.

While there has been no absolute proof yet, if you apply some Google logic to this question, the answer is yes.

Why?

Google Loves Google

There’s no denying that fact. That’s why anytime Google releases any web property where anyone can get a link from, it makes sense to get a link from that property. YouTube and Google Plus pages also come to mind. It takes about ten minutes of your time to create a profile on either site, and you can instantly get a great Google loving link pointed to your site.

In raw numbers, the increase to your site depends on how many +1′s your site earns. Obviously, the more the better, but I think what’s even more critical is when you see a search result where someone you know has voted for a site (+1). It implies trust (assuming you know the person who voted for it) for that site.

That metric is something that Google will never be able to accurately measure. We humans will always be the final one making the decision, but the algorithm will play some part in trying to value the intent and trust of others in relation to your search.

Personally, I am not a fan of the +1 idea, but I do it for all my sites and always try to get all my clients to add it as well. You have to figure that as long as Google is around, it will have it’s place.

Braden Pollock joins ScienceFiction.com as traffic explodes

Posted by – January 5, 2012

ScienceFiction.com tops 1 million monthly pageviews and reshuffles its ownership.

Domain name investor Braden Pollock is now part owner of ScienceFiction.com, LLC, joining Patrick Ruddell in the online site that wants to be the “TechCrunch of science fiction”.

I caught up with Ruddell today to understand what this means for his business and how the site is doing.

Ruddell said that he and Pollock bought out the previous partners, so now both own and equal share of the company.

Domain Name Wire: How has ScienceFiction.com changed since you started?

The short answer, besides a new partner, is a lot has changed. After the launch via TechCrunch.com in December of 2010 we were looking at about 45,000 visits per month. Problem is there wasn’t any growth the first six months. I let my previous partners run content and social media until June of 2011 when, with the help of my kick-ass wife, we took over every aspect of the business, including a website redesign.

DNW: When you first started on ScienceFiction.com you weren’t a real SciFi buff. Has this changed?

This is true, I only saw this as a business opportunity. Although I still see this as a business opportunity, I am now a big fan of anything Science Fiction. The site has really brought me back to my childhood. After not reading comic books for 20+ years I now own hundreds. In addition to comic books my wife and I watch a lot of sci-fi tv shows and movies. Oh yea, my wife has fallen in love just like me.

DNW: How has the site grown so far? What are your plans for growth?

Once we took control in June we made a big push on social media, something I love, and added more writers. With this we were able to more than double traffic to 102,000 visits in July. As we continued with this course traffic grew, September we saw 205,000 visits. The next big step for us was to be included in Google News which I submitted for in September/October. Finally, on December 1st we got approval and inclusion. With this one change traffic took a tremendous leap as we closed December with 439,000 visits, over 1.2 million pageviews.

January is already looking good, average daily visits are higher than last month. At this point it is about putting out quality content on a consistent basis. We have roughly 15 excellent writers putting out 7-13 article per day.

Plans for growth, we still have a lot of SEO work to do. To date we haven’t done much, everything has been organic. We are adding our first in-office employee next week. It will be her job to get unique content via exclusive stories from production studios, comic companies and book publishers along with interviews from actors, writers and so forth. Content is the single most important part of our business. If a story is good then other sites pick it up, link to us and readers share it socially.

On a closing note, because I know my team will read this, without their continued help and support we wouldn’t have the success that we have today and will have in the future. We all see great things for this site.

Forecasting SEO Traffic

Forecasting SEO Traffic

Forecasting SEO Traffic

Forecasting SEO Traffic

One of the hardest things to predict is the amount of traffic that a site can earn from the keywords they are going after. Google doesn’t give out those numbers unless you pay for them. (more on that later) Most tools that project the data are wildly inaccurate. I’ve had sites in the top spot in Google and the traffic was 50% higher than what Google predicted and by the same token, has had sites in the top spot get 50% less traffic than what was shown.

Of course, there are many factors that can lead into this some of them are:

#1 — The top ranked page doesn’t meet the true search intent of the user.
#2 — If a site has held the top spot for a good amount of time, there might be those who are tired of seeing the same site appear in the top spot and will look at the sites further down in the rankings.
#3 — The page that is ranked doesn’t convert despite the traffic it gets.

There are many other reasons why the traffic doesn’t add up to what Google projected (or any other tool used to get the numbers).

So how can you get a true number for SEO traffic?

You gotta pay for it. Google Adwords.

In using Google Adwords, you are going to pay for the terms you want to get ranked for. There, you will see the real number of impressions (i.e., how many times someone searched on Google or on their network).

That is the Holy Grail of keyword research my dear reader.

Some businesses will be able to do this, and quite frankly, if you are serious about getting the best possible phrase and are looking for an accurate number, this is the only way to get it done.

It’s Google’s game, and if you want real numbers, it’s what you have to do.

Getting Free Traffic Just Got Way Easier – Auto Traffic Buddy

Auto Traffic Buddy

Latest bunch of crap in my inbox:

If you want more free traffic and higher search engine rankings…

What I’m about to show you is a TOTAL game changer!

It’s not often that the words “totally automated” and “it actually works” can be used in the same sentence.

But, this is *exactly* what this does.

Totally automated traffic and link building.

I know, I know. You’ve heard that before, right?

Do yourself a favor and check this out:

http://vipdig.com/blog/traffic-buddy

This is *not* the usual crap you’ve seen before.

And more importantly…
it WORKS great!

http://vipdig.com/blog/traffic-buddy

It’s a plugin called Auto Traffic Buddy.

Google LOVES stuff like this. Yes, buy this plugin, and show Google all the links originating from the same websites, and see how swift the Google Banhammer wipes the rankings for you and everyone involved in this link network. Remember, if it sounds easy, it’s not going to last and ultimately Google will find and remove this and any other plugin that tries to automate linking.

5 Questions To Be Answered at Next Week’s TRAFFIC Conference

Posted by – October 15, 2011

The only TRAFFIC of the year is upon us.

This year TRAFFIC will host just one conference, which kicks off Sunday in Fort Lauderdale.

Last year there was a TRAFFIC conference just about every other month. Combined with other domain conferences it was simply too much. Having just one TRAFFIC this year means a greater concentration of domainers and a bigger focus on business.

Here are five questions to be answered next week in Fort Lauderdale.

1. How will the auction perform? This auction will be different from most other recent live domain auctions for a couple reasons. First, there will be no online bidding. This should make the technical aspects of the auction go much smoother. Seriously, when’s the last time that a live auction with online bidding went smoothly? Second, domain owners could pay to get their domains in the auction.

The auction list keeps getting bigger — 120 domains at last count. This is a little long for my tastes, but a well run auction will go quickly. I think the numbers will be bolstered by a handful of registry owned .xxx domains.

2. Will the venue top last year’s? The Ritz Carleton will surely be nice, but I also liked last year’s hotel in South Beach. It appears the Ritz is actually across the street from the beach rather than right on it like last year’s (although there’s a bridge to the beach). Still, Rick and Howard have signed up to host TRAFFIC at the Ritz again next year, so it must be a sweet venue.

3. Will the event have class? Last year’s TRAFFIC in Florida had some moments we’d all soon like to forget, such as one of the show promoters yelling at a representative of one of the domain industry’s biggest revenue sources at a party. Hopefully we won’t see that this year. Also, let’s remember that the domain industry isn’t the adult industry. .xxx is the big sponsor. That makes sense. But I hope the entire conference takes into consideration that this industry has both men and woman, and not all like the adult entertainment industry.

4. Any big news? I’m hearing whispers of some fairly big company and product announcements in conjunction with next year’s show. We’ll see.

5. What will attendance be?Since this is the only TRAFFIC this year I’m guessing the total number comes in around 250-300.

VeriSign Releases Domain Traffic Treasure Trove to the Public

Posted by – July 7, 2011

VeriSign domain scoreVeriSign has released VERISIGN® DomainScore™ to the public.

The beta tool allows anyone to enter an unregistered domain name and get an idea of how much traffic the domain gets.

DomainScore uses NDX data — basically visit requests to non existent domain names — to calculate a score ranging from 1-10. The higher the score the higher the traffic to the domain. The score is for the last full week, the last 30 days, and last 60 days.

Based on my experience with similar data for pending delete domains, I think you’ll find the data most relevant for domains that haven’t just expired. This reduces the amount of dead link traffic included in the total and gives a better impression of type-in traffic.

VeriSign already offers this data to registrars, some of which in turn offer it to customers. Dynadot offers the data but with a day turnaround time. Some customers have apparently run millions of domains through Dynadot’s system. However, a number of large registrars have held this data close to their chest for their own use.

The public tool provides data instantly on up to 100 domain names.

VeriSign might need to put a CAPTCHA on it :)

Why Creating and Canceling TRAFFIC at ICANN Were Both Smart Moves

Posted by – January 5, 2011

It was a great idea, but ultimately doesn’t work out.

When ICANN announced that its Spring meeting would be held in San Francisco, I immediately thought “this would be a great time to hold a domain name conference.” An hour later I received an email from Rick Schwartz saying that TRAFFIC would hold a “retreat” in conjunction with the ICANN meeting. Great idea.

Shortly thereafter I started thinking of a bunch of problems with this idea.

Just this week Schwartz announced that the conference is a no-go, and I think canceling the event was also smart idea.

The problem is that ICANN meetings are long. Officially the meeting kicks off on Monday, March 14 and runs through Friday, March 18. But the weekend before is also packed with working group sessions and workshops.

So a lot of people will be attending for seven days. Tack on a couple for a domain conference and that’s just too much.

But I still think domainers should attend the ICANN meeting. I believe Jothan Frakes is trying to arrange some events for domainers around the meeting (if he’s not, I just volunteered him). And we should be sure to where our professional hats.

Conference details can be found here.
