Google real time analytics won’t kill ChartBeat and Woopra (Yet)
Google Analytics real time is nice feature but no replacement for dedicated services.
Remember when people used to pay six figures to get web site analytics like what Google now offers for free? That shook up the industry.
Now Google’s real time analytics threatens to destroy a couple startups including ChartBeat and Woopra.
Google just rolled out real-time analytics to the masses and I played around with it a bit last week.
My conclusion: tt’s a nice addition to Google Analytics but it isn’t a replacement for Chartbeat or Woopra.
Woopra is my favorite real time analytics tool. I like how I can quickly see who’s on my site, where they came from, and what they’re doing.
Google’s real time has a great dashboard but doesn’t have the same visitor-by-visitor view that I’ve come to enjoy.
That doesn’t mean that it is far behind, though. I’d be concerned if I were in the real time analytics business.

Google’s Real Time Google Analytics, Um, Not Really.
Google’s Real Time Google Analytics, Um, Not Really.

September 29, 2011, Google announced that it now had “Real Time” analytics information in it’s Google Analytics software. To me, this was always the most glaring weakness of their free service. Because they had never had it, I also use another service that does have “Real Time” tracking – Clicky. I thought to myself that this move would certainly put a smaller company like Clicky out of business.
Until I read the details of the Google Announcement.
Simply put, it’s currently just one report rather than actually processing all data in real time.
Sure that’s somewhat helpful, but nothing near what Clicky offers – I can actually watch people navigate through my sites and see what pages they are clicking on and all relevant information to that.
Course, Google does offer Google Analytics Premium for $ 150,000/year. Ouch!
It’s very hard to complain about “free”. But that is how Google gets everyone’s data as part of their world domination business growth strategies.
Until the day comes where Google Analytics can match the service I get from Clicky (which I doubt it ever will) let them spout off on all of these supposed upgrades, and let their lemmings follow them everywhere on the web.
