VeriSign releases more traffic data about unregistered domains
.com and .net registry provides added detail about NXD traffic.
VeriSign has enhanced its DomainScore tool to provide more insight into the traffic unregistered domains receive.
DomainScore provides a relative score for the amount of traffic an unregistered domain name receives. But this so-called “NXD” traffic doesn’t qualify the type of traffic very well. That’s part of the reason people complain that they register a domain with a high score based on VeriSign’s data and don’t get any traffic.
The latest update includes time-of-day and location information about unregistered domain traffic.

The column chart above is an example of the traffic insight you can get. Lots of requests but few unique requests? That should be a warning sign. When the traffic comes in may have to do with the type of site.
The geo location data is helpful for a number of reasons. One obvious one: if you’re going to park the domain, you probably want traffic from the U.S. rather than China because it monetizes better.
VeriSign has also enhanced the user interface and historic data for its DomainView tool.

Searching through 500 or more Expired Domains Names a minute!
TorontoDomainer.com: It’s Saturday night at 21:33 hours; (9:33pm). I’m sitting staring at the computer screen typing the words you are reading. 3 top domain registrars offering .com domains for under $3
Major registrars offering special discounts right now.
I’ve written before about how Go Daddy, Network Solutions, and Register.com offer discounted registrations in Google ads for the term “domain name”.
Both are pushing out special deals via other channels, too.
Go Daddy just posted this link to its Twitter account. It’s good for a one domain name in a number of TLDs for just $ 2.49.
Web.com’s two big registrars have similar deals going on right now. Register.com is offering $ 2.75 domain names (limit 3) if you use the coupon code Reg275ne. Network Solutions is offering one registration at $ 2.95 until tomorrow, but I can’t get the links in its emails to work.
Of course, domainers don’t benefit much from these deals since they limit your registrations. But you may as well take advantage of them if you have some domains on your hand-register list.

As new domains like .nyc get announced, watch out for bogus web sites like this one
Be careful about sites for new TLDs.
Yesterday Information Week reported that Neustar will be running the .nyc domain name when it launches.
As definitive news about new top level domains starts hitting the web, people should be careful about misleading web sites promoting the domains.
Here’s one example: NYCDomain.org.
The domain, owned by a Utah man, is all about the .nyc domain name. And that’s fine.
What’s misleading is the description tag — the thing that shows up when you find the site in Google. Here’s what it reads:
Welcome to .nyc Domain Names. Official domain name registration provider. Register your .nyc domain in real time here.
Hmm. There aren’t any accredited registrars for .nyc yet.
If you look back at Google’s cache of the page from March 18, it reads:
Pre-Registration for the new dot.NYC Domains TLD is now open. Pre-register your dot .NYC top level domain Names now.
To be fair, lots of sites from even reputable domain registrars offered pre-registrations. It’s the latest description that seems most off base.
The only thing on the actual site I can find for actually requesting a .nyc domain is the contact page, which reads “If you would like to request a domain name ending with .NYC, just pop it into the form, and we will let you know when your name is available to be registered.”
A New York City official told PaidContent that the site was misleading and not authorized to reserve domains.
I left a message at the phone number on the whois record for NYCdomain.org today seeking comment.

Matt Cutts publishes video about new top level domains and Google search results
Likely to be a “transition period” where Google figures out how to index new top level domains.
Today’s Google webmaster video is about new top level domains.
Google engineer Matt Cutts already grabbed some headlines when talking about new top level domains and search results last week.
I’m not sure if Cutts answered the user’s question, which had to do more with rankings and Page Rank. Instead, he responded to the question of if domains on these new TLDs will be indexed, and any hiccups to expect.
Cutts points out that we already have hundreds of new TLDs, and Google has done a pretty good job indexing domains on these TLDs to provide the most relevant results.
But indexing sites on new TLDs isn’t automatic. He says there will be a transition period while Google (and other search engines) figure out what the valid new TLDs are and what (second level) domains are on them.
(By the way, your email software might have some initial challenges going through this same transition.)
