Go Daddy Poised to Hit 50 Million Domain Milestone Next Week

Posted by – September 23, 2011

A big milestone for the biggest domain name registrar.

The Go Daddy Group, which includes domain name registrar GoDaddy.com, is likely to cross the 50 million domain milestone next week.

The company hit 45 million domains registered just nine months ago in December.

The 50 million domains number represents the total number registered at a point in time. If you add up all the domains registered over time the number would be much higher.

As of the end of May GoDaddy.com had nearly 30 million .com domain names registered. (May is the latest month with actual data filed with ICANN.) That represents nearly a third of the .com base and more than three times as many as the nearest competitor, eNom.

Its share of newer top level domain names is even higher. In the same month GoDaddy.com had over 4 million .info domains registered out of a total of 7.4 million registered everywhere.

You can expect this number to jump when new top level domains are launched in a couple years.

Bob Parsons Explains Go Daddy – KKR Deal to Domain Name Wire

Posted by – July 4, 2011

Investment makes 36 millionaires, will help company expand overseas and acquire complementary businesses.

I just got off the phone with GoDaddy.com founder Bob Parsons, who explained the deal his company just struck with KKR, Silver Lake, and Technology Crossover Ventures.

Contrary to reports in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, this was not an outright acquisition. Parsons remains the single largest shareholder in the company in what he terms a “partnership”.

Before the deal Parsons owned 78% of the company and employees owned 22% through stock options.

Both Parsons and the employees benefited from the investment, with 36 employees getting $ 1 million plus checks.

All of the senior management invested in the deal and a number of people with options rolled some of it into stock in the company.

Why not just sell the company?

“I’m not dead yet, Andrew,” Parsons told me. “The reason I’m the single largest investor is because this is what I eat, sleep, and breathe.”

Parsons will remain with the company as Executive Chairman of the Board and company president Warren Adelman has been promoted to CEO.

“We cut a smokin’ deal with KKR, Silver Lake Partners, and Technology Crossover Ventures,” said Parsons. But it isn’t just about the money, he said. “What excites me is what they bring to us as a competitor.”

He explained that the investors’ experience in overseas markets and technology will help the company grow. The company may also make acquisitions, such as to help the company offer a greater range of cloud based services.

“If I could pick three companies out of the blue [to partner with], these are the guys I’d pick,” he said.

Parsons would not disclose the amount of investment, but when I asked him about reports of $ 2.25 billion he said “it might be close”.

Go Daddy Has Donated $4.2 Million To Charity Already This Year

Posted by – May 22, 2011

Domain registrar tops last year’s donations, and it’s only May.

Through just five months of 2011, domain name registrar Go Daddy has already donated more to charity than it did all of last year.

Go Daddy’s philanthropic organization Go Daddy Cares has donated $ 4.2 million to charity so far this year, compared to $ 3.4 million all of last year, the company announced today.

One of the biggest beneficiaries is Hope for Haiti, recipient of $ 1 million in donations from the company. Go Daddy is currently letting customers “round up for charity” by rounding up the cost of their purchases to the nearest dollar and donating the difference (matched by Go Daddy) to Hope for Haiti.

But the money has been spread across more than 50 charities according to this ongoing ticker at GoDaddyCares.com. (The ticker’s total is as of April 5, so it’s a bit behind).

By my calculation, Go Daddy’s donations year-to-date come out to about 9 cents per domain currently registered at Go Daddy, and about $ 1,300 per employee.

eNom and Go Daddy Still Disqualified from Applying for New Top Level Domains

Posted by – April 17, 2011

Language of new applicant guidebook disqualifies two large domain name registrars.

If you read the spirit of the rules related to new top level domain names, domain name registrars eNom and Go Daddy are still disqualified from applying for their own top level domain names.

In the latest draft ICANN tweaked the language regarding applicants for new TLDs who have been found guilty of cybersquatting, but not enough to let these two companies off the hook.

The guidebook reads:

In the absence of exceptional circumstances, applications from any entity with or including any Individual Applicants with confirmed convictions of the types listed in (a) – (m) below will be automatically disqualified from the program…

has been involved in of a pattern of adverse, final decisions indicating that the applicant or individual named in the application was engaged in cybersquatting as defined in the UDRP, ACPA, or other equivalent legislation, or was engaged in reverse domain name hijacking under the UDRP or bad faith or reckless disregard under the ACPA or other equivalent legislation. Three or more such decisions with one occurring in the last four years will generally be considered to constitute a pattern.

The new language in the latest guidebook notes that decisions must be “final”. It also adds language regarding people who are guilty of reverse domain name hijacking.

But eNom and Go Daddy both have three or more “final” UDRP losses with at least one in the past four years.

Now, technically there are ways around this. For both registrars the domains that got them in trouble were actually owned by affiliate or subsidiary companies. There’s also a bit of wiggle room in the language, such as “generally be considered” and “in the absence of exceptional circumstances”.

As I’ve commented before, I don’t think it’s right to apply this arbitrary standard of cybersquatting retroactively. And I can’t see ICANN denying an otherwise good application from either of these domain registrars.

PETA Moves Domains from Go Daddy to Register.com

Posted by – April 1, 2011

Animal rights group moves domain names to competitor.

Making good on its promise, PETA has moved its domains (well at least peta.org) away from Go Daddy. The domain name is now registered at Register.com.

This whole elephant shooting video is obviously a hotly debated subject.

Some are arguing this is a different type of controversy than Go Daddy’s commercials.

I’m not so sure, and we’ll see how this plays out.

But I’m reminded of Bob Parsons’ keynote at DOMAINfest last month. I’m paraphrasing from memory here. Basically he said there are people who really like you or your business, a bunch who are ambivalent, and then a small minority who really hate you.

It’s those that really hate you that are your key to success. Keep them drummed up.
