VeriSign releases more traffic data about unregistered domains

Posted by – May 14, 2012

.com and .net registry provides added detail about NXD traffic.

VeriSign has enhanced its DomainScore tool to provide more insight into the traffic unregistered domains receive.

DomainScore provides a relative score for the amount of traffic an unregistered domain name receives. But this so-called “NXD” traffic doesn’t qualify the type of traffic very well. That’s part of the reason people complain that they register a domain with a high score based on VeriSign’s data and don’t get any traffic.

The latest update includes time-of-day and location information about unregistered domain traffic.

The column chart above is an example of the traffic insight you can get. Lots of requests but few unique requests? That should be a warning sign. When the traffic comes in may have to do with the type of site.

The geo location data is helpful for a number of reasons. One obvious one: if you’re going to park the domain, you probably want traffic from the U.S. rather than China because it monetizes better.

VeriSign has also enhanced the user interface and historic data for its DomainView tool.

“Really cool” guys at Digimedia sold Box.com for about $1 million

Posted by – March 26, 2012

Box.com sold for about $ 1 million.

Last year file sharing service Box.net bought the Box.com domain name from Scott Day at Digimedia. The purchase price was not disclosed.

But now it has — just shy of a million bucks.

CNET writer Rafe Needleman discussed the domain name with Box CEO Aaron Levie. The net-net: the company bought the domain for between $ 900,000 and $ 999,000.

About the negotiations with Digimedia, Levie said the Digimedia guys were “really cool”. (Those may be just Needleman’s words.)

The article also suggests that Levie was prepared to spend more for the domain if he had to.

Watermelon farmer Scott Day founded Digimedia. He got into the domain business with the purchase of Watermelons.com. He story is detailed in The Domain Game by David Kesmodel.

(Note: just saw that Jamie wrote a follow up
with the sales price on Friday.)

Matt Cutts publishes video about new top level domains and Google search results

Posted by – March 21, 2012

Likely to be a “transition period” where Google figures out how to index new top level domains.

Today’s Google webmaster video is about new top level domains.

Google engineer Matt Cutts already grabbed some headlines when talking about new top level domains and search results last week.

I’m not sure if Cutts answered the user’s question, which had to do more with rankings and Page Rank. Instead, he responded to the question of if domains on these new TLDs will be indexed, and any hiccups to expect.

Cutts points out that we already have hundreds of new TLDs, and Google has done a pretty good job indexing domains on these TLDs to provide the most relevant results.

But indexing sites on new TLDs isn’t automatic. He says there will be a transition period while Google (and other search engines) figure out what the valid new TLDs are and what (second level) domains are on them.

(By the way, your email software might have some initial challenges going through this same transition.)

HybridDomainer.com: With the Facebook IPO slated for the spring, here is a look at some things you need to know about the Facebook IPO. Proactiv wants to be quiet about its product recall

Posted by – November 29, 2011

Company does its best to keep recall out of the press and out of the search engines.

Last month I wrote about how the company behind Proactiv, the skin care product pitched by Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, had registered multiple domain names hinting at a recall of its product.

Although I couldn’t find information about the recall on Guthy-Renker’s web site, I noticed a steady and increasing stream of web site visitors hitting the article who were searching for “proactiv recall”.

Indeed, it turns out the company is recalling product. But it’s being rather quiet about it.

It isn’t using any of the straight forward domain names I discovered, such as ProactivRecall.com. That page doesn’t resolve. Instead you’ll find information at PAbottlereplacement.com.

It gets better. The web site has “no index” in its robots.txt file, meaning the company doesn’t want it to show up in search engines. The title tag doesn’t include the name “Proactiv” either.

So if you do a Google search for the term, odds are you won’t find any official information.

But the domain names gave it away.

ICANN Responds to U.S. Government Questions About New Top Level Domains

Posted by – June 9, 2011

Kurt Pritz responds to Congress.

ICANN Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz has responded (pdf) to a written question and expanded on his answers to questioning from U.S. representatives during a hearing about new TLDs on May 4.

Representative Howard Coble submitted a written question asking if ICANN was going to make special arrangements for “brand” top level domain names should a brand owner decide to wind down operation of the new top level domain name.

At the time of the hearing there was no such provision, and the .brand TLD could have been run by another entity. Since then, and perhaps in response to Coble’s question, a provision has been added to eliminate this problem and allow .brand owners to close their TLDs.

Pritz also provided more detailed answers to questions including:

-Why new gTLDs should be introduced
-If there will be a globally protected marks list (the community doesn’t want it)
-If anyone at ICANN has a financial incentive to approve the program by June (no, just meeting deadlines to prepare the board for its decision)
-If there are any safeguards against introducing new TLDs that are racial epithets (there’s a process)
